Sistema New Brunswick

Sistema New Brunswick (Sistema NB) is a social program of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) that provides free music instruction to disadvantaged children from grades one to six for three hours per day, every day after school. Through an intensive orchestral music program, social change is fostered through playing music together; a direct counter to the corrosive impact of perpetually being left out. Children are transformed – and so are their futures.

    Based on the internationally renowned El Sistema in Venezuela, Sistema NB brings about transformative change for children by:
    •creating the motivation required to keep children in school;
    •promoting the tools needed for success including improved academic achievement, behavior, respect, dedication, hard work, cooperation, and team work;
    •promoting a strong sense of identity and belonging; and
    •instilling confidence and self-esteem through the joy and sense of accomplishment that is achieved through playing and performing music together as an orchestra.

    The NBYO began its first Sistema NB program in Moncton, in October, 2009 with fifty children. Since then, we have expanded and replicated the program so that we now serve over 500 children in 4 centres with 10 children’s orchestras:
    •265 children in Moncton,
    •140 children in Saint John,
    •68 children in Richibucto, and
    •40 children in Tobique First Nation.
    We offer a positive after-school environment, a daily nutritional snack, and a meaningful program where children belong to something very special- an orchestra!
  • Mandate/Mission:
    Our mission is to promote the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras in order to inspire children and youth to achieve their full potential and to acquire values that favor their growth and have a positive impact on their lives and society.

    Our vision is social development through an innovative and hope-instilling music education program distinguished by its excellence and for having a positive impact on both the children and the communities where it is implemented.

    The NBYO dreams of a “Sistema New Brunswick and Canada" as a way to enrich the lives of children. In addition to developing music skills, children will improve literacy and grades, gain confidence and self-esteem and build a solid foundation in their lives for the future.

    Sistema NB has verified the possibility of transformative social change through music and the orchestra. We have demonstrated that great art is for everyone and that it has the power to improve the lives of children and their families and enhance our society. We have shown that for children, an orchestra means joy, motivation, discipline, teamwork - that it builds confidence and self-esteem and that it is incredibly fun.
