Check out the latest post from Lauren Akbar, the Youth Engagement Coordinator at SYiM (Southern Youth In Motion). They’ve been super busy these past few months working away on a couple of new initiatives, including the launch of a new website and the second issue of SYiMzine. The Spring 2013 issue is an inspiring read, featuring stories and art from youth that participated in SYiM’s first ever showcase event last December. Another recent initiative includes the ‘Youth Voices of Neskantaga’ arts and music festival that took place last month in Neskantaga First Nation, located 480km northeast of Thunder Bay, ON. The festival provided the community with an opportunity to heal after the tragic suicides of two young men in less than a week (read more here). Some of the artwork from this event has made it’s way to Toronto for an exhibition later this month. Read on for more information and to find out how you can get involved! (Cora-Rae Silk, ArtBridges)
“We’ve been working hard here at the Partnership in the past few weeks!
Our website has received a facelift; have a look at www.northsouthpartnership.com. Under the ‘latest news’ section, you’ll find a number of articles related to our recent work in Neskantaga First Nation, including the most recent here.
One of the highlights of our trip to Neskantaga was the ‘Youth Voices of Neskantaga’ arts and music festival. This showcasing of local youth’s talent was so successful that we’d like to share it with you. We brought a number of art pieces back to Toronto and are organizing an exhibition at Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham Street, Toronto. Opening night will be Thursday, June 20th, and you can read more about the exhibition here. We are hoping to bring a number of youth from Neskantaga to Toronto for the event, and are currently fundraising for this purpose. If you can help to cover travel costs for youth from the community, please visit our Canada Helps page or send a cheque to our address (PO Box 47116, 10 Dundas St. E., Toronto, ON M5B 0A1), including a note that you’d like your donation to benefit this project. Please email lauren.akbar@northsouthpartnership.com if you’d like more information as the event details are finalized.
This week we released our latest SYiMzine, which includes submissions from a number of the northern and southern youth who participated in our Southern Youth in Motion Showcase this winter. We’re so proud of what the youth were able to share with us in this issue. Have a look here!
Chi miigwetch for your support; we’re feeling great about what lies ahead this summer!”
