“Red Deer’s Meet the Street is an inclusive arts and culture festival in its inaugural year with a vision of engaging community and supporting growth by showcasing central Alberta’s diverse creators. Our mission is to encourage broader community involvement in the activation of our downtown core through music, visual art, performances and meaningful partnerships.
The creation of up to 10 downtown, back-alley murals will precede a three-day festival and kickoff the month long celebration of Alberta Culture Days. The murals will enhance the vibrancy of Red Deer’s downtown spaces, contribute to the creation of community landmarks that foster civic pride and provide an inspiring backdrop to future outdoor events in the downtown core.
The Meet the Street planning committee invites artists and artist collectives/organizations to submit their portfolios. Selected artists/collectives will be invited to design an outdoor mural for one of ten downtown, back-alley locations. Selected artists will be encouraged to consider the location of the murals while developing a design by either reflecting on historical context, the ecological region, socio-cultural issues of Central Alberta, place and identity or the physicality of the space. The site-specific designs will be created after the initial selection of the artists is completed.
