“The 7th Annual Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival, presented by the Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV), offers opportunities for exhibition, performance, connection and learning to visual and performing artists who self-identify as outsiders. The Festival will showcase the work of over 40 visual artists, which will be available for purchase at the festival.

Community Arts Council of Vancouver presents the annual Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (VOAF), offering visual and performing artists facing social exclusion and other barriers opportunities for exhibition and sales, performance and participation, connection and learning. VOAF is Canada’s first and only festival for Outsider Art, which is represented by significant fairs and museums globally. The artists may be self-taught or trained: they are all devoted to their creative practices, and come from a point of view that is outside the mainstream art world trends.”

“The program supports Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) artists to research, develop and create new work and engage with their communities. It also funds opportunities for Indigenous organizations and communities to strengthen their relationships with the arts. The program has three categories:

• Individuals
• Ad hoc groups and collectives
• Organizations

Grants help cover the costs of:

• research and development that will lead to the creation of new work. Artistic research, exploration and experimentation, including workshops and residencies, are also eligible. All emerging, mid-career and established artists (including curators) working with all art forms are welcome to apply
• creation and production of new work in any art form (film, video, visual arts, new media, cultural arts, dance, theatre, music, pottery, fiction, spoken word and storytelling, etc.). All emerging, mid-career and established artists working in all art forms are welcome to apply
• presentations, exhibitions, publications and festivals in which the primary purpose of the project is the presentation, promotion and distribution of art made by Indigenous artists. Examples include exhibitions, individual and series presentations, publications, tours, festivals and innovative audience development projects
• connections and partnerships that bring artists together through conferences, workshops, gatherings, delegations, exchanges or other activities that will foster artistic relationships, connections and partnerships that strengthen the Indigenous arts community

The program gives priority to projects that involve the presentation of music in Northern Ontario.

The 2023 Emergence Symposium will take place on September 12 and 13 at the Clark Centre for the Arts. It will convene community engaged arts practitioners, policy makers and community leaders for a transformative event that harmonizes climate action and creative brilliance using the arts as the spring board to explore important work and issues together.

Day 1 – September 12: Indigenous Wisdom, Play, and Artful Connections

Step into a world of Indigenous wisdom, play, art, and community as the first day unfolds. Our engaging sessions will delve into the profound connection between art and play that has been overshadowed by the influence of capitalism. Join us as speakers unravel our innate thirst for artful play, followed by facilitated sessions led by our dedicated team and collaborators. Dive into art-making and explore diverse applications of play and art. Take part in mentorship hives through group drop-in sessions, fostering collaborative growth.

Day 2 – September 13: Art as a Catalyst for Climate Action

Embark on a profound journey as artists take centre stage to explore the pivotal role of art in addressing climate change. Delve into the arts’ potential to drive sustainable transitions amidst climate challenges. While the arts’ impact on climate action gains recognition, there’s a need for research on its influence within the arts sector. Engage with a panel featuring artists championing climate action, showcasing their work, and leading critical dialogues. Participate in insightful think tank sessions, gaining fresh perspectives on the vital link between artistic expression and environmental advocacy.

Our symposium transcends mere conversations — it ignites action. Join our breakout working groups and collaborate with kindred spirits to turn ideas into tangible initiatives. Together, we’ll innovate creative approaches to champion climate action.
