{"id":1,"date":"2009-05-08T14:40:45","date_gmt":"2009-05-08T19:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/en\/pei-youths-recession-survival-strategy\/"},"modified":"2009-05-08T14:40:45","modified_gmt":"2009-05-08T19:40:45","slug":"pei-youths-recession-survival-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artbridges.ca\/fr\/pei-youths-recession-survival-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"PEI Youths Recession Survival Strategy- Brilliant!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26\" style=\"border:0 initial initial;\" title=\"pei\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/pei.gif?w=300\" alt=\"pei\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During this economic downturn, I\u2019ve had some interesting conversations with a few community art centres on <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">how they are faring regarding their funding revenue this year.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0I spoke with Tanya of <em>Youth Can Do<\/em> in Stratford, P.E.I, she runs a wonderful drama community arts program for youth and \u201cyouth at risk\u201d (she said \u201cevery youth is at risk!\u201d).She said that the program had lost some funding revenue this winter because of the economic downturn.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than canceling the production of their annual Shakespearian play put on by youth, the youth decided that they would revamp all of last year\u2019s costumes and set (rather than buying new costumes, props and set material.) She said that this was the youths\u2019 decision and that they are <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">solving the low funding problem by putting their heads together, thinking out of the box and taking action<\/span>. She also said that every youth who joins the community arts program must also volunteer 10 hours before becoming a member. The young participants also support their drama program with monthly youth dances.\u00a0\u00a0I love this. She was not really worried about the long-term affects of the downturn on the program, she said the community really wants it to continue.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI just can&rsquo;t stress enough the difference that is made to any youth program when the Community is behind it and the local Municipal Government (as well).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This problem-solving is about turning to and working with your community (whether it\u2019s a youth at risk community, or one in an inner-city housing project community). And <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">it\u2019s about tapping into the amazing assets of your community for volunteers and unexpected resources where there are hands, minds and hearts ready to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>John McKnight and John Kretzmann write about this in <strong>Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community&rsquo;s Assets<\/strong> (1993). \u201cThe seminal volume in which Kretzmann and McKnight explain the principles and practices that guide the asset-based community development approach.\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>They also write several workbooks on the subject.
