{"id":12190,"date":"2013-02-22T08:04:57","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T13:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/?p=12190"},"modified":"2013-02-22T08:04:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T13:04:57","slug":"friday-morning-coffee-new-arts-social-change-minor-at-ocad-u","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artbridges.ca\/fr\/friday-morning-coffee-new-arts-social-change-minor-at-ocad-u\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Morning Coffee: New Arts &#038; Social Change Minor at OCAD U"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sugarandweedkiller\/2003953843\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12191\" alt=\"photo credit: GIRLintheCAFE\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/02\/artbridges-friday-coffee-flickr-girlinthecafe.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[12190]\" width=\"510\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">We recently heard through the grapevine that that the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD U) will be launching a new Minor Degree program in \u201cArt &amp; Social Change\u201d this Fall (2013).<em> Fantastique!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Here\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocadu.ca\/students\/records_registration\/course_calendar\/1213\/undergraduate\/art\/minor_program_guides\/art_social_change.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a> to program information and an excerpt from the program description from the 12\/13 OCAD U Course Calendar:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026.an investigation of the role that art and artists have and can play as catalysts of change, students pursuing this minor stand to expand the liberating powers of dialogue, dissent and collaboration as cultural practitioners engaged in local, national and global contexts.\u201d (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocadu.ca\/students\/records_registration\/course_calendar\/1213\/undergraduate\/art\/minor_program_guides\/art_social_change.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12\/13 OCAD University Course Calendar<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">I know that the OCAD University faculty has been developing this program behind the scenes for a few years. My co-worker, Ania Stypulkowski, and I met with Professor B.h. Yael\u00a0last year to learn more about the development of the program and to share what ArtBridges knew about other academic programs being offered throughout Canada at the time. Although OCAD U had offered Art &amp; Social Change classes prior to the introduction of this Minor program, Ms. Yael explained to us that they\u00a0had never before combined the Art &amp; Social Change-related courses into a concise program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Through our research at ArtBridges and our individual academic backgrounds, we have become familiar with a few programs and classes being offered by academic institutions in Canada within the Arts for Social Change field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In fact, a few of us from the ArtBridges office\u00a0took York University&rsquo;s \u00ab\u00a0Community Arts for Social Change\u00a0\u00bb class with Professor Deborah Barndt. This foundation-level course is open to all York U students, but it&rsquo;s also a part of York U&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/fes.yorku.ca\/students\/current\/bes\/certificates\/cap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Certificate in\u00a0Community Arts Program (CAP)<\/a>, which is a joint program offered between the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Environmental Studies. Our colleague, Alexa de Repentigny-MacAulay,\u00a0went on to complete the certificate program!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">As a student auditing the\u00a0Community Arts for Social Change\u00a0course, I\u00a0personally\u00a0found real value in the reading material\u2014for its exploration of issues dealing with social justice,\u00a0ethics, best practices, tools, etc. in the context of\u00a0art-making and arts &amp; community engagement.
