We think that if \u2018mentorship grants\u2019 could be provided by funders, seasoned community-engaged arts initiatives could be paired with emerging community-arts initiatives and many of these challenges could be addressed via peer support…<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Last Friday, we posted a summary<\/a> from a telephone survey on needs and challenges of community arts organizations in Ontario that Maxine Sidran, our ArtBridging Ontario Researcher, did.<\/p>\n

The following is a companion piece to last week’s summary<\/a>:<\/p>\n

An OCAD grad student worked with Maxine\u2019s survey results and tallied all the mentions of various needs and challenges that were expressed by each of the 39 (30%) of the 132 English-speaking community arts organizations in Ontario previously profiled on this blog.<\/p>\n

In order of top needs\/challenges here is the list:<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

21<\/strong> \u2014 sustainable funding, alternate funding, donations
\n12<\/strong> \u2014 volunteers, presenters
\n9<\/strong> \u2014 space, venue
\n8<\/strong> \u2014 board members, how-to
\n8<\/strong> \u2014 increased profile, promotion, networking, publicist
\n7<\/strong> \u2014 partner organizations, collaboration
\n7<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 how-to info, toolkits, best practices
\n6<\/strong> \u2014 grant writing info, grant writer
\n6<\/strong> \u2014 staff, personnel, \u00ab\u00a0capacity\u00a0\u00bb
\n4<\/strong> \u2014 corporate funding, sponsorship, partner
\n4<\/strong> \u2014 time
\n3<\/strong> \u2014 IT, tech support
\n3<\/strong> \u2014 administrator
\n2<\/strong> \u2014 web design, presence
\n2<\/strong> \u2014 professional development, staff training
\n2<\/strong> \u2014 strategic planning
\n2<\/strong> \u2014 social media
\n2<\/strong> \u2014 showcase
\n1<\/strong> \u2014 forum, Q&A
\n1<\/strong> \u2014 community research
\n1<\/strong> \u2014 sustainability plans<\/p>\n

If anything, the tally reflects that we are not alone with issues; many challenges are shared in this field.<\/p>\n

One thing that Maxine and I found in the comments she recorded, was that people are keen collaborate, mentor and help other initiatives work through issues\u00a0they’ve\u00a0already worked through successfully\u2014but, this takes time. And time is a resource that no one seems to be able to spare much of.<\/p>\n

We think that if \u2018mentorship grants\u2019 could be provided by funders, seasoned community-engaged arts initiatives could be paired with emerging community-arts initiatives and many of these challenges could be addressed via peer support. The outcome would positively effect the quality of service and capacity of these and similar organizations and lead to more arts in communities\u2014the ensuing benefits to communities.<\/b><\/p>\n
