Thanks for sharing, Krista!<br \/>\n&#8211; Cora, Indigenous Community Arts Coordinator &amp; Communications Assistant<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00ab\u00a0I just returned from my second trip to Labrador with ArtsCan Circle. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artscancircle.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArtsCan Circle<\/a> sends teams of volunteer musicians and artists to remote Canadian Indigenous communities to make art and music with First Nations kids (you can read about my first trip <a href=\"http:\/\/smallpondarts.blogspot.ca\/2010\/11\/from-small-pond-to-big-land.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>)&#8230; And I feel like I left a piece of myself behind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_1.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16367\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_1\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_1.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Self-Portrait with Stick<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My travel mates were David Anderson and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikestevensmusic.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Stevens<\/a>. David is the Artistic Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/clayandpapertheatre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clay &amp; Paper Theatre<\/a>, where I worked for 4 years before starting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallpondarts.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Small Pond Arts<\/a> with Mil\u00e9. The stories David told me over the years about his trips with ArtsCan were the reason that I wanted to get involved. Mike is a musician and the founder of ArtsCan; he\u2019s such an interesting guy that a documentary about him, <em>A Walk in my Dream<\/em>, is premiering December 2, 2011 in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the days before the trip, I was sewing like crazy, turning the fabric from this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/smallpondarts.blogspot.ca\/2010\/06\/dont-let-your-silo-go-naked-how-to-make.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silo banner<\/a> into dozens of hand puppets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_2.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16368\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_2\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_2.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While sewing I listened to Thomas King\u2019s CBC Massey Lectures, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/ideas\/massey-archives\/2003\/11\/07\/massey-lectures-2003-the-truth-about-stories-a-native-narrative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Truth About Stories, A Native Narrative<\/em><\/a>. It is some of the most compelling writing I&rsquo;ve ever experienced: hilarious, political, personal, and profoundly moving. It touches on the plethora of issues faced by First Nations people: racism, poverty, a cruel and deeply unfair history\u2026 and was a perfect reminder of why I was volunteering to spend the week in Sheshatshiu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">King writes, \u00ab\u00a0We maintain and tolerate poverty not because we believe adversity makes you strong, but because we&rsquo;re unwilling to share.\u00a0\u00bb I\u2019m no saint, but I do know how to share. So off I went.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_3.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16369\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_3\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_3.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We pulled into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysis.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">school<\/a> parking lot on Monday morning and there was a certain comfort in returning to this place. I knew where I was. I knew why I was there. Teachers remembered me, kids remembered me. I quickly fell into the routine. The kids loved the hand puppets I\u2019d brought, making them into fairy tale and comic book characters, affixing buttons, fabric and the assorted bits that I&rsquo;d brought along with me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_4.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16370\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_4\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_4.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Arrangements were made for an elder, Carolyn Andrews, to come in and tell a traditional story, in both English and Innu-aimun; David and I would work with a Grade 6 class to turn the story into a shadow puppetry play. The grade 9 students who were her audience fell dead silent while the old woman spoke. This class had been making music with the looping equipment that Mike had brought with him, and they would be creating the score for our shadow play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_5.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16371\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_5\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_5.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Mike makes music with some kids using looping equipment<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We brought along with us a couple of Flip video cameras. I&rsquo;m not really one to endorse products, but these cameras are so simple and sturdy that I had no qualms about handing them to even the youngest kids and saying \u00ab\u00a0Go make a video.\u00a0\u00bb The cameras have a USB key that pops out so you can plug it right into your computer and watch videos back instantly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The sixth graders had been out swimming when the elder had come in, so we showed them the video I&rsquo;d taken of her telling the story, <em>Kautitikumat: The Caribou Hunters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_6.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16372\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_6\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_6.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We made a list on the board of the images from the story, both characters and things, and we let the kids choose what they wanted to make. I love doing puppetry with kids because it is so playful. It exercises the imagination and kids of all skill levels can succeed. And by succeed I mean have fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The art teacher at Sheshatshiu Innu School, John Foster, is a great guy. I spent a few lunch hours at his place in nearby Northwest River. His house on the shores of Lake Melville is a beauty of a spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_7.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16373\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_7\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_7.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">David, Mike and I were staying in Goose Bay, about 45 minutes away. The days went a little like this: Hotel to school. Puppets puppets puppets masks puppets puppets puppets. School to hotel. Occasionally hotel to restaurant, or school to grocery store. Groceries in Goose Bay are expensive, but they do come with complimentary bingo cards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_8.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16374\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_8\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_8.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Driving driving driving. Well, Mike was driving. I was the backseat passenger, an hour and a half each day. Backseats are confining. You can see, but not see really well. Kind of like spending a week in someone else&rsquo;s community \u2013 you can only see so much, and most of the reality is hidden from view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The trees whizz past me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_9.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16375\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_9\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_9.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The week is so busy that it\u2019s hard to even process it as it\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_10.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16376\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_10\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_10.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We performed the shadow play on Friday four times, presenting it to every other class in the school. I was really impressed by the kids&rsquo; level of focus when rehearsing and performing the show, I know the repetition of rehearsals and shows can get boring. But these kids were totally on, totally present. I loved seeing them work together, helping each other to remember their cues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_11.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16377\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_11\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_11.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And before I knew it, it was all over.\u00a0 The final bell of the week rang, students and teachers dispersed. As we were getting ready to leave the school a girl from the third grade came up to me with the puppet she\u2019d made earlier that day. We talked about puppets; she wanted to know what other types of puppets there were in the world, and when I would be coming back so we could make more. She hugged me a few times and we said goodbye; then as I was getting in the car she appeared again, waving and yelling across the parking lot, \u201cGoodbye, Miss!\u201d I waved back. A ticker tape parade and twelve marching bands couldn&rsquo;t have given me a more magnificent send-off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_12.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[16366]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16378\" alt=\"SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_12\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SmallPondArts_ArtsCanCircle_12.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The trees whizz past me.
