For our new ArtBridges\u00a0Tips & Tools series, we asked\u00a0DAREarts First Roots Program Associate,\u00a0Cathy Elliott,\u00a0to share some tips\u00a0with artists who are new to\u00a0working in First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities.<\/p>\n
Cathy,\u00a0a member of Sipekne’katik, Nova Scotia, has been working with DAREarts in Indigenous communities\u00a0for eight years.\u00a0She and DAREarts have\u00a0lots of helpful info to share. When you step off a plane or train or car onto a reserve, you are essentially stepping into another Nation. You are the outsider here. You have to behave in an open, respectful way just as you would if you were visiting any new country. There are customs, histories, languages and belief systems to respect and consider.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves in the histories of Indigenous Peoples. Not all First Nations are alike. Read the<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Report<\/i><\/b><\/a>. It\u2019s online.
