\u00ab\u00a0The 17th Annual imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival<\/a> is excited to announce the final round of programming for the 2016 edition, running October 19 – 23 in Toronto, Ontario.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Saturday, October 22<\/strong>, imagineNATIVE will present\u00a0A Night for Chanie<\/strong>\u00a0at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, an evening of words, songs, and images, in remembrance of Chanie Wenjack on the 50th anniversary of his death. The event is sponsored by RBC.<\/p>\n

Chanie Wenjack was a young Anishinaabe boy who was taken to Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School at the age of nine. At the age of 12, Chanie escaped the school on foot to return to his family. On the night of October 22, 1966, Chanie died alone next to the railroad, over 60 kilometres from the school, but still hundreds of kilometres away from home. His death prompted a coroner\u2019s inquest \u2013 the first for a student of a residential school \u2013 which recognized that the \u201cIndian education system causes tremendous emotional and adjustment problems\u201d for Indigenous children.<\/p>\n

imagineNATIVE presents this special event honouring the memory of Chanie, and all former students of residential schools. Hosted by Connie Walker (CBC),\u00a0A Night for Chanie<\/strong>\u00a0will include an introduction by\u00a0Senator Murray Sinclair<\/strong>, Chief Commissioner of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission; a reading and book signing by author\u00a0Joseph Boyden<\/strong>\u00a0from his new novella\u00a0Wenjack<\/em>, illustrated by visual artist and filmmaker\u00a0Kent Monkman<\/strong>; a screening of the short film\u00a0SNIP<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Terril Calder<\/strong>, written and narrated by Joseph Boyden, which was inspired by the legacy of Wenjack;\u00a0Keewaydah<\/em>, a new performance artwork \u00a0by Terril Calder as part of her {Re}conciliation project with Joseph Boyden; and a musical performance by\u00a0Digging Roots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

imagineNATIVE will host the 12th annual Indigenous musical showcase\u00a0The Beat<\/strong>, presented by FACTOR, on Saturday, October 22 at the Horseshoe Tavern. The Beat will begin by screening eight music videos by artists including Digging Roots, Projek Toombz, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Moe Clark, Clayton Michel, Binaeshee-Quae Couchie-Nabigon, and Sofia Jannok. Live performances will follow the videos featuring\u00a0DJ Ariel<\/strong>,\u00a0Shawnee<\/strong>,\u00a0Wolf Saga<\/strong>, and\u00a0DJ Shub<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 3rd Annual\u00a0indigiTALKS<\/strong>, the Festival’s lecture series, will feature\u00a0Son of a Sun: The Life, Art, and Politics of Willie Dunn<\/strong>, presented by filmmaker and writer Zachary Johnston, and sponsored by the R&M Lang Foundation. Son of a Sun: The Life, Art, and Politics of Willie Dunn will focus on the life and legacy of this trailblazing filmmaker, musician and artist of Scottish\/Irish and Mi\u2019kmaq blood. Son of a Sun: The Life, Art, and Politics of Willie Dunn will take place on Thursday, October 20 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.<\/p>\n

imagineNATIVE\u2019s free\u00a0Industry Series<\/strong>\u00a0brings leading industry professionals from across Canada and around the world to an intimate and welcoming setting designed to help advance professional careers of emerging and established filmmakers. The Industry Series will include an Indigenous VR Spotlight, pitch competitions, and panels about marketing and \u00ab\u00a0discoverability\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Previously announced programming includes: the Opening Night Gala film\u00a0Angry Inuk<\/strong>\u00a0by Alethea Arnaquq-Baril; the Closing Night film\u00a0Bonfire<\/strong>\u00a0by Dmitrii Davydov;\u00a0We Can\u2019t Make the Same Mistake Twice<\/strong>\u00a0by Alanis Obomsawin;\u00a0Maliglutit (Searchers)<\/strong>\u00a0by Zacharias Kunuk; an International Spotlight on Greenland; and the annual Art Crawl featuring the Canadian exhibition premiere of\u00a0Wairua<\/strong>, and\u00a0Indigenous Movie Monsters<\/strong>\u00a0by multimedia artist Jay Soule.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
