While most of the ArtBridges\/ToiledesArts\u2019 team&rsquo;s work is done online or over the phone from our Toronto office, getting a chance to travel, see community arts program in action and finally meet partners in person is always highly inspiring and gives all the meaning to our work.<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve decided to dedicate a series of three blog posts to the amazing community arts and arts for social change initiatives we\u2019ve discovered in Montr\u00e9al. Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/fr\/2016\/10\/highlights-of-artbridges-site-visits-in-montreal-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday&rsquo;s post<\/a> to read about the beginning of our site visits trip!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, June 22nd <\/strong><br \/>\nOn our third day we separated in order to visit more community partners. While Seanna explored more art hives (<a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/fr\/2015\/04\/gros-plan-sur-les-ruches-dart-de-montreal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>La Ruche St Henri<\/strong> and <strong>Le Milieu<\/strong><\/a>) and met with\u00a0Marilyn Lajeunesse, Educational program officer at the Musee des Beaux Arts, Catherine met with Emily Lalibert\u00e9 from <strong>Funambules Media<\/strong> and later on with Joel Naggar, intervention coordinator, who gave her a\u00a0tour of the famous Day Centre for homeless youth <strong>Dans La Rue<\/strong>.\u00a0We met for lunch in the middle\u2013with Esther Filion from <strong>Rouage<\/strong> and Seanna ended the day with a meeting with Chad Lubelsky at the <strong>J. W. McConnell Family Foundation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a02008\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/funambulesmedias.org\/parcours-chacun-son-temps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Funambules\u00a0Medias<\/strong><\/a> Team\u00a0has\u00a0worked\u00a0towards\u00a0social\u00a0change by providing marginalized\u00a0and\u00a0at-risk\u00a0populations,\u00a0mostly\u00a0youth,\u00a0with media training and material for them to\u00a0create, to\u00a0express\u00a0themselves\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0reflect\u00a0on\u00a0systemic\u00a0causes\u00a0leading\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0criminalization\u00a0of youth.\u00a0Funambules\u00a0Medias also offers production and broadcast services.\u00a0 Every\u00a0summer, they\u00a0organize\u00a0the\u00a0Festival\u00a0de\u00a0Films\u00a0Sous\u00a0les\u00a0Etoiles,\u00a0a\u00a0big\u00a0outdoor\u00a0and\u00a0free\u00a0film\u00a0festival\u00a0in\u00a0Montr\u00e9al parks.\u00a0This\u00a0event\u00a0is\u00a0very\u00a0popular\u00a0and features screenings\u00a0of\u00a0documentaries\u00a0related\u00a0to\u00a0social\u00a0change. Finally,\u00a0they\u00a0produce\u00a0various\u00a0kinds\u00a0of\u00a0documentaries\u00a0and\u00a0institutional\u00a0films\u00a0for\u00a0organizations driven\u00a0by\u00a0social\u00a0change endeavours.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20128\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20128\" class=\"wp-image-20128   \" alt=\"Collectif Porte-Voix's stunning prevention book &quot;Parcours, Chacun son Temps&quot;.\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-21-at-1.32.10-PM.png\" width=\"269\" height=\"145\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Collectif Porte-Voix&rsquo;s stunning prevention book \u00ab\u00a0Parcours, Chacun son Temps\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Musee des Beaux Arts<\/strong><br \/>\nSeanna met with Marilyn Lajeunesse, Educational program officer at the Musee des Beaux Arts. She had learned about the museum\u2019s progressive community engagement program \u201cSharing the Museum\u201d at a recent Power of the Arts Forum. Started 15 years ago, this program, supported by the museum\u2019s foundation, collaborates with diverse community partners both outside the museum\u2019s walls with communities and inside the museum\u2019s art studios. Community partnerships include homeless drop-ins, eating-disorder clinics, and refugee centres. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danslarue.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dans la Rue<\/strong> <\/a>was founded by Father Emmet Johns\u00a0\u201cPops\u201d in 1988. This charity organization helps homeless and at-risk-youth, providing care and services related to their\u00a0immediate needs and to help them acquire skills needed \u00ab\u00a0to lead more autonomous and rewarding lives.\u00a0\u00bb The Day Center offers two artistic spaces running programs on a weekly basis (a visual arts room and a music recording\/production room), along with additional drop-in programs led by other community arts organizations such as <a href=\"http:\/\/artbridges.ca\/community\/profile\/88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cirque Hors Piste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20420\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/montreal-newsletter-photo-4.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[20425]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20420\" class=\"wp-image-20420 \" alt=\"montreal newsletter photo 4\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/montreal-newsletter-photo-4.jpg\" width=\"358\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Ruche St Henri&rsquo;s main room<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>La Ruche St Henri Art Hive<\/strong> in St. Henri is based in a storefront with a spacious backyard and stellar cellar (a depot for found materials once bound for the landfill and now repurposed for art-making.) Seanna visited with facilitators, Sarah Tevyaw and Nicole Macoretta, during the open studio workshop for seniors. Piano, loom, spinning wheel, books, ink, indigo dye, gardening and pencils\u2026one can get involved with any of the supplies and projects, enjoy a cup of tea and chat with other participants in a relaxed, quiet and warm community studio that inspires creativity, camaraderie and belonging. La Ruche collaborates with neighbouring organizations including a hospital for cancer patients. Outpatient peer-support circles meet here to make art in a setting alternative to hospital. Catherine and Seanna both met with Esther Filion from <a href=\"http:\/\/engrenagenoir.ca\/rouage\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engrenage Noir \/ ROUAGE<\/a>. \u00ab\u00a0Engrenage Noir, founded in Montr\u00e9al in 2002, is an non-profit organization. Its program <a href=\"http:\/\/artbridges.ca\/community\/profile\/99  \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ROUAGE<\/a> supports activist art practice financially and through training and networking. It aims at partnering with community organizations defending peoples\u2019 rights and their members who share a similar form of oppression or social exclusion in order to see how an activist art project can support their work.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20426\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/montreal-newsletter-photo-5.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[20425]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20426\" class=\" wp-image-20426 \" alt=\"montreal newsletter photo 5\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/montreal-newsletter-photo-5.jpg\" width=\"358\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kay (on the right) and her visiting friend at Le Milieu<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Seanna then met with Kay Noele at the <strong>Le Milieu &#8211; Atelier et Caf\u00e9 de Quartier<\/strong>, an Art Hive near metro Beaudry. This small corner-store art studio\/caf\u00e9 has floor-to-ceiling shelves of art supplies open for the community. One person was sewing on a machine, another working on a silk screen, another writing. Delicious cake was ready and coffee was brewing. (Sales pay the rent!) Open for the community for free, this community art studio is run as a co-op with fee-paying members. Anyone can be a member by paying about $50. Members are encouraged to volunteer to keep the doors open for approximately 3-hour periods, teach an art activity, organize supplies or help out at the caf\u00e9. The co-op finds enough volunteers to run this open caf\u00e9 &amp; studio every day (7 days a week!) year-round. What every city neighbourhood would benefit from! Kay and the few facilitating the co-op make the work look easy and fluid, but there is an art to making this work so well. Visit and find out!<\/p>\n<p>At the end of a busy day of site visits, Seanna met with Chad Lubelsky, a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brilliant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Program Director with the <strong>J. W. McConnell Family Foundation<\/strong>. This was a chance to thank Chad for the foundation\u2019s support to ArtBridges and to keep the conversation going. The foundation has provided ArtBridges with the means to develop a theory of change, an evaluation framework, impact evaluation, as well as project development and capacity building. Chad loved to hear about our site visits and had some suggestions about other programs to see.
