4elements Living Arts<\/strong> welcomes proposals from emerging artists who would like to participate in this year\u2019s Elemental Festival in Kagawong | Gaagigewang on Mnidoo Mnising |Manitoulin Island.<\/p>\n

Elemental Festival<\/strong> is a site-specific multi-arts gathering that occurs annually during the salmon run in the fall. Our small village centers around the Kagawong River that runs over Bridal Veil Falls and empties into Mudge Bay at the northern side of the island. Billings Township has a population of approximately 500 year- round residents, living in a stunning northern Ontario location, on the North Channel of Lake Huron. Its closest neighbouring community is M\u2019Chigeeng First Nation, one of six First Nation Territories on Manitoulin Island.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, we invite proposals for temporary sculptural installations, film\/new media works and writing, that consider questions of land, and land-use history. We are particularly interested in the relations between the land, environmental change, and reconciliation given the impact of settlement, forestry, farming, and Treaty history, on Manitoulin Island in particular. How has colonization shaped how we understand the land? What are relations between environmental issues and Treaties? How do we re\/claim land through land-based practices, art and art-making? Festival engagements will encourage consideration of the relations between land, environment\/environmental change and reconciliation; they will acknowledge the important role of the many cultural communities within and adjacent to Billings Township: the French, the English, and the First Nations (Ojibwe, Odaawaa and Pottawottami).<\/p>\n

With the support from federal Canada 150 funding, 4elements and Billings Township will see 7 permanent public sculptures and 40 heritage plaques installed throughout the Township this year, creating a ‘Billings Art and Heritage Trail’. Six artists have been chosen via an extensive community engaged selection process; the 7th sculpture will be designed via a 4elements\u2019 facilitated community collaborative design process. All permanent works will be installed by end of summer 2017 and will be \u2018unveiled\u2019 during Elemental Festival.<\/p>\n

The emerging artist(s) selected from this call are asked to enter into a dialogue with one of the new permanent works as well as the curatorial theme, to challenge the idea that permanent public installations are static. Rather, we propose that the permanent works present entry points into a complex, multi-layered discussion and should act as provocations for discussion to be picked up and carried forward by community members, and in this case, the selected emerging artist(s). The selected emerging artists will receive an artist honorarium of $1000, plus accommodation if non-local. Artists must be able to attend the festival and arrive in time to complete installation a day prior to the festival opening. All applications are welcome and in particular, Francophone and First Nations artists are encouraged to get in touch.<\/p>\n

\nInterested emerging artists can submit the following items attached as a single .pdf with the subject line \u2018Emerging Artist Proposal \u2013 EF 2017\u2019 to patricia@4elementslivingarts.org

\n2. A brief project proposal (1 page or less).
\n3. A brief artist statement (1 paragraph).
\n4. Artist CV (2 pages or less)
\n5. Image list, stating title, date and any other relevant details.
\nPlease also submit the following, separate from the .pdf:
\n6. Maximum of 5 good quality images or short video clip of your work with a corresponding image list (images should be no larger than 1MB)
\n7. $10 application fee via e-transfer or cheque mailed to the 4e office. This goes directly toward supporting the festival. If this is a barrier for you, please get in touch.

\u00ab\u00a04elements Living Arts<\/strong> invite tous les artistes \u00e9mergents qui d\u00e9sirent participer au Elemental Festival de cette ann\u00e9e \u00e0 Kagawong | Gaagigewang on Mnidoo Mnising |\u00cele Manitoulin, \u00e0 faire leur demande.<\/p>\n

Elemental Festival<\/strong> est un rassemblement artistique annuel se d\u00e9roulant \u00e0 l\u2019automne pendant la migration anadrome des saumons. Notre petit village se trouve le long de la Rivi\u00e8re Kagawong, connect\u00e9e aux chutes Bridal Veil et se terminant dans la baie Mudge au nord de l\u2019\u00eele. Le canton de Billings a une population d\u2019environ 500 habitants permanents, vivant dans un lieu exceptionnel au nord de l\u2019Ontario dans le chenal nord du lac Huron. La communaut\u00e9 la plus proche est la Premi\u00e8re nation M\u2019Chigeeng, un des six Territoires des Premi\u00e8res Nations sur l\u2019\u00cele Manitoulin.<\/p>\n

Cette ann\u00e9e, nous acceptons des propositions d\u2019artistes pour des installations sculpturales temporaires ainsi que des \u0153uvres cin\u00e9matographiques\/nouveaux m\u00e9dias et d\u2019\u00e9criture, qui discutent de la terre et de l\u2019historique de l\u2019utilisation des sols. Nous sommes particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ress\u00e9s dans les liens entre la terre, les changements environnementaux et la r\u00e9conciliation, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 l\u2019impact de la colonisation, de la foresterie, de l\u2019agriculture et de l\u2019historique des trait\u00e9s sur l\u2019\u00cele Manitoulin. Comment la colonisation a-t-elle fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 la mani\u00e8re dont nous voyons la terre ? Quels sont les liens entre les pr\u00e9occupations environnementales et les Trait\u00e9s ? Comment pouvons-nous r\u00e9clamer la terre par le biais de pratiques ax\u00e9es sur la terre, les arts et la cr\u00e9ation artistique ? Les engagements au Festival encourageront la prise en compte des liens entre la terre, les changements environnementaux et la r\u00e9conciliation. Ils permettront de reconna\u00eetre l\u2019importance du r\u00f4le des trois communaut\u00e9s culturelles pr\u00e9sentes autour et \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du canton de Billings : La communaut\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise, anglaise et des Premi\u00e8res Nations (Ojibwe, Odaawaa et Pottawottami).<\/p>\n

Cette ann\u00e9e, avec le soutien financier du Fonds Canada 150, 4elements et le canton de Billings pourront pr\u00e9senter 7 sculptures publiques permanentes et 40 plaques comm\u00e9moratives install\u00e9es dans tout le canton, cr\u00e9ant ainsi un sentier artistique et du patrimoine. Les artistes \u00e9mergents choisis par le biais de cette invitation seront demand\u00e9s de rentrer en contact avec les nouvelles \u0153uvres permanentes et le th\u00e8me de l\u2019\u0153uvre pour contester l\u2019id\u00e9e que les installations publiques sont statiques. Au lieu de cela, nous proposons que les \u0153uvres permanentes contiennent des points d\u2019entr\u00e9e et puissent entra\u00eener des discussions complexes suffisamment pertinentes pour permette de faire r\u00e9agir les membres de la communaut\u00e9 et les artistes \u00e9mergents. Les artistes \u00e9mergents choisis recevront une r\u00e9compense artistique et honorifique de 1 000 $, plus l\u2019h\u00e9bergement. Les artistes doivent \u00eatre capables d\u2019assister au festival et d\u2019arriver \u00e0 l\u2019heure pour compl\u00e9ter l\u2019installation une journ\u00e9e avant l\u2019ouverture du festival.
