{"id":21272,"date":"2017-06-02T06:57:27","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T10:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/en\/?p=21272"},"modified":"2017-06-02T06:57:27","modified_gmt":"2017-06-02T10:57:27","slug":"cartography-17-creative-map-making-artstarts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artbridges.ca\/fr\/cartography-17-creative-map-making-artstarts\/","title":{"rendered":"Cartography 17: Creative Map-Making (ArtStarts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16932\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/artstarts-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" \/><br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0<strong>Time to Make Your Map Toronto<\/strong><br \/>\nIn honour of Canada\u2019s sesquicentennial (#Canada150) and Art Starts\u2019 25th anniversary, Art Starts is collaborating with artists and residents city-wide to craft a restorative and creative 10\u2019 x 20\u2019 map.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Art Starts<\/strong>, a pioneer in Toronto\u2019s community arts sector, is celebrating 25 years of artistry while contributing to Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary with their city-wide project: <strong>Cartography 17<\/strong>. Launching on June 5th, the project will create a map of Toronto with a vision that is restorative, collaborative and inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>Cartography 17 will use a multifaceted approach to map-making by collaborating with artists, Indigenous storytellers, a cartographer and residents of local communities \u2013 with a focus on underserved areas of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>This hands-on form of expression will use a variety of artistic media to create a map that uniquely celebrates the cultures, communities and neighbourhoods that comprise Toronto\u2019s rich history.<\/p>\n<p>Cartography 17 map animator, Daniel Rotsztain &#8211; The Urban Geographer, will create the physical foundation of the map including geography, geology, infrastructure, landmarks across Toronto and First Nations\u2019 histories.<\/p>\n<p>Cartography 17 envisions a new kind of map-making, one that is a diverse, multimedia collection of stories and experiences from people, places and spaces that are often not represented in our city.<\/p>\n<p>The collective of artists, along with the map, will tour communities city-wide alongside an Indigenous storyteller to acknowledge and honour the land we reside upon through traditional Indigenous storytelling practices.<\/p>\n<p>The final map will act as a Toronto legacy \u2013 developed in honour of Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary \u2013 and will be exhibited in spaces such as Toronto City Hall, libraries and galleries across the Greater Toronto Area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Project Phases:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>June 5th, 2017<\/strong>&#8211; Launch &amp; mural foundation; drawing and indigenous consultation @ Art Starts Studios<\/li>\n<li><strong>July-Oct., 2017<\/strong>&#8211; Site visits begin; touring &amp; 90 hours of community engaged art workshops at Toronto Community Housing enclaves and other locations city-wide<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nov. 23rd, 2017<\/strong> &#8211; Public unveiling at Art Starts Fundraiser followed by exhibitions, final installation reveal and exhibitions city-wide.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>About Art Starts<\/strong><br \/>\nArt Starts is an award-winning charitable, not-for-profit organization that uses the arts as a vehicle to encourage social change in Toronto\u2019s underserved neighbourhoods.
