Le 23 octobre 2018, MU a inaugur\u00e9, dans le quartier de La Petite-Bourgogne \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al,\u00a0 une nouvelle murale hommage \u00e0 la musicienne Daisy Peterson Sweeney.
\n\u00ab\u00a0Cette murale, r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par Kevin Ledo sur le mur d’une habitation de l’OMHM,\u00a0s\u2019inscrit dans notre collection Hommage aux b\u00e2tisseurs culturels montr\u00e9alais et vient enrichir la s\u00e9rie consacr\u00e9e au jazz qui comporte trois\u00a0autres murales :\u00a0deux consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 Oscar Peterson et Oliver Jones, elles aussi sur des murs de l’OMHM, et une retra\u00e7ant l’histoire de la Petite-Bourgogne sur le mur d’enceinte d’Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

Musicienne et enseignante extraordinaire,\u00a0Daisy\u00a0Sweeney a eu pour \u00e9l\u00e8ves de nombreuses personnalit\u00e9s du jazz, notamment son fr\u00e8re Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Ken Skinner, Joe Sealy et Norman Marshall Villeneuve.\u00a0 Elle a toujours cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 rendre la musique accessible au plus grand nombre, en particulier aupr\u00e8s des jeunes, et s\u2019est impliqu\u00e9e toute sa vie dans son quartier, La Petite-Bourgogne, o\u00f9 elle a cofond\u00e9 le Montreal Black Community Youth Choir (Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir).<\/p>\n

En faisant de la d\u00e9mocratisation de l\u2019art un des axes principaux de sa mission, MU incarne cette volont\u00e9 de se r\u00e9approprier l\u2019espace public par l\u2019art.<\/p>\n

Un MUs\u00e9e d\u2019art \u00e0 ciel ouvert<\/strong>
\nTelle la mue d\u2019un animal, MU transforme Montr\u00e9al en donnant \u00e0 ses murs une nouvelle peau. Tout aussi vivantes, \u00e9clectiques et diversifi\u00e9es que la m\u00e9tropole, les murales de MU font voir la ville autrement et procurent des \u00e9motions, au d\u00e9tour d\u2019une rue. MU rend ainsi hommage \u00e0 la beaut\u00e9 et \u00e0 la richesse de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience humaine et collective des quartiers de la m\u00e9tropole.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

MU INAUGURATES A 4th MURAL CELEBRATING JAZZ IN LITTLE BURGUNDY, IN
\nTRIBUTE TO DAISY PETERSON SWEENEY<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Montreal, October 23, 2018 \u2014 MU, the charitable non-profit mural arts organization, inaugurated a new mural in the Sud-Ouest borough paying tribute the late great jazzwoman, Daisy Peterson Sweeney. The event took place in presence of Mme Sophie Thi\u00e9baut, borough councillor for the Saint-Henri-Est\u2013Petite-Bourgogne\u2013Pointe-Saint-Charles\u2013Griffintown district, Oliver Jones and a number of family and community members. This new piece is the latest addition to MU\u2019s collection Montreal\u2019s Great Artists, an ambitious undertaking that has been a source of pride for the organization since 2010, highlighting the creative minds and forces of those who have made outstanding contributions to Montreal\u2019s cultural scene.<\/p>\n

The mural was designed by Montreal artist Kevin Ledo, based on a photo taken by Tedd Church. A world-renowned portraitist, Ledo has previously collaborated with MU on a mural tribute to Janine Sutto, completed just before her death in 2016.<\/p>\n

Located at 1791 rue St-Jacques, at the corner of Saint-Martin, this is the fourth mural in a series celebrating jazz and exploring Little Burgundy\u2019s musical heritage. Another large-scale MU mural in the neighbourhood, created in collaboration with Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, retells the history of Little Burgundy, birthplace of Montreal\u2019s jazz scene. Two additional murals honouring legendary jazzmen Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones are located mere steps away.<\/p>\n

\u201cMU wanted to establish a theme in the heart of Little Burgundy, one that celebrates the founders of Montreal jazz, and we are extremely proud to be adding a woman to this series of exceptional artists. I am particularly fond of this collection because it invites a new generation of Montrealers to discover our local art and history\u201d said Elizabeth-Ann Doyle, MU\u2019s Executive and Artistic Director.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to thank MU for this new project. Little Burgundy now has four extraordinary murals that showcase our rich history. We must remember the vital contributions made by this talented musician, who motivated and accompanied some very gifted students, notably the great Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones. We are still working towards finding a significant place to name after this amazing woman, one that will honour her memory,\u201d said Benoit Dorais, Sud-Ouest borough mayor and chairman of the Montreal Executive Committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the 20th large-scale mural to go up on low-rent housing units in Montreal. These murals are a source of pride for tenants, employees and residents in the neighbourhoods where they exist. 2019 will mark the Office municipal d\u2019habitation de Montr\u00e9al\u2019s (OMHM) 50th anniversary and we are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with MU,\u201d said Danielle C\u00e9cile, Executive Director of the OMHM.<\/p>\n
