We asked for submissions that highlighted stories of innovation, resiliency, and creativity. As clearly demonstrated in the incredible nominations, amazing work continues to happen in this field. Our hope is that these stories may be an inspiration. Perhaps new connections will be made, ideas spawned and amplified, and support generated. The awards jury was composed of three active leaders in community arts in Canada from Thessalon (ON), Yellowknife (NWT), and Toronto (ON).The recipient organizations receive a certificate and an award of $300. When the project was first envisioned in 2019, the goal was to bring researchers, dancers, circus acrobats, musicians, affected individuals and caregivers together underneath the same roof, to facilitate knowledge exchange and empathy through the arts—after all, what better way to bridge these seemingly disparate communities than to move and be creative together? When we received a « Healthy Brains, Healthy Lives » grant just at the onset of the pandemic, we had to quickly reimagine how to adjust the participatory nature of project, as well as the resulting performances, to the new and ever-shifting COVID-19 restrictions—particularly given that we were working with vulnerable populations.

To our surprise, shifting our dance and music workshops to Zoom came with certain advantages. Not only did it facilitate participation from various geographical locations, but it also allowed us to meet as humans rather than as our predetermined roles coming into the project. Once the awkwardness of seeing ourselves move in our respective little squares wore off, there was something endearing about watching hands and faces dance across the screen, and not knowing which belonged to a dancer, neuroscientist, or person with Parkinson’s disease. “Resilience” soon became a keyword in our Zoom sessions; not only did it characterize the participants’ strength in the face of, but it also described the powerful group bond we created by pushing our boundaries, openly sharing our experiences, and being genuinely curious to learn from others. Finding new ways to build community and co-create in a virtual context allowed us to develop a thick skin in light of the many challenges we faced, all while breaking down the walls between us. »

– submitted by Naila Kuhlmann

https://www.facebook.com/pieceofmindcollective/
https://www.instagram.com/pieceofmindcollective/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN8PlYIYVGYTP8vqdvSPXwA

Nous avons le plaisir de vous présenter les lauréats des
septièmes Prix honorifiques annuels d’ArtBridges/ToileDesArts !
Ces prix soulignent un travail remarquable dans le domaine de l’art communautaire au Canada.
