Boys and Girls Club of\u00a0Moncton<\/a> is part of \u00a0Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada.\u00a0\u00a0It has an outstanding arts program<\/span><\/span>called: A-Zone.\u00a0\u00a0The centre\u00a0was founded<\/span> in\u00a0Moncton\u00a0in 1957.\u00a0Its\u00a0mandate<\/span> is\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.\u00a0\u00bb (web).\u00a0The\u00a0general model<\/span> is\u00a0an arts program within an established community centre.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0catchment area<\/span> is 9 communities including low income housing areas in\u00a0Moncton, New Brunswick. The languages of service<\/span> are primarily\u00a0English and French.\u00a0It\u00a0serves\/works with\u00a0ages<\/span>: 6-18.\u00a0The daily number of children and youth<\/span> that attend the entire A-Zone program is between 175-200 participants per day. There are 12 A-Zone programs that run each day.\u00a0The hours of operation<\/span> of the A-Zone program are 3-9 PM Monday through Saturday. \u00a0The\u00a0arts disciplines<\/span> offered are music, dance, drama, photography, movie making, creative writing, painting, and drawing.\u00a0\u00a0The entire club has\u00a03\u00a0full-time\u00a0staff<\/span>,\u00a03-4\u00a0part-time staff, \u00a0138\u00a0approximate volunteers\/year.\u00a0 It\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0permanent art studio<\/span> within a building that the Boys and Girls Club owns.\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0drop-in<\/span>. It\u00a0offers\u00a0registered classes<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is free<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0It has many events and art shows<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The A-Zone\u00a0is really good at<\/span> outreach. Staff go out each night with their bus and pick up 100 kids from 9 surrounding communities. There is a problem with accessibility because most kids can’t walk to the club because there are highways in the way.\u00a0The distance for a full bus run is 15km (round-trip), and the\u00a0maximum\u00a0distance of any community is 9km away.<\/p>\n

They are\u00a0known for<\/span> their amazing variety of arts and music, as well as their transportation service for the children and youth; which makes this free arts program highly accessible. Its strengths<\/span> are\u00a0its welcoming environment for New Canadians, French, English and Indigenous who can all come together.\u00a0Its goals<\/span> this year\u00a0are to recruit members of the retiring community to volunteer.\u00a0Its\u00a0challenges<\/span> this year are staff\/volunteer turnover and funding. It\u00a0really needs\u00a0a second bus so they can reach all 9 communities every night in order to conduct outreach.<\/p>\n

Boys and Girls Club of\u00a0Moncton\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0board of directors, and a strong program committee. \u00a0Its\u00a0annual budget<\/span> range for the A-Zone is $26,000.\u00a0The program costs $26\/per child\/yr.\u00a0\u00a0It relies heavily on volunteers and\u00a0donations-in-kind.\u00a0 It is funded<\/span> minimally by the\u00a0gov\u2019t with the exception of a substantial government grant recently donated to renovate their building.<\/p>\n

Boys and Girls Club of\u00a0Moncton\u00a0is interested<\/span> in partnering\u00a0or doing outreach with other community arts projects\/programs\/organizations\/resources.\u00a0It is runs an\u00a0established\u00a0community\u00a0arts program.\u00a0It is\u00a0interested\u00a0in sistering\/linking with another\u00a0emerging\/established\u00a0ones to share information with.<\/p>\n
