{"id":27195,"date":"2010-03-23T06:00:10","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T06:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artbridgesblog.ca\/?p=657"},"modified":"2010-03-23T06:00:10","modified_gmt":"2010-03-23T06:00:10","slug":"profile-the-a-zone-moncton-boys-and-girls-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artbridges.ca\/fr\/profile-the-a-zone-moncton-boys-and-girls-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Profile: The A-Zone, Moncton Boys and Girls Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/moncton21.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[27195]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-660\" title=\"moncton2\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/moncton21.jpg\" width=\"379\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/moncton3.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[27195]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-658\" title=\"moncton3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/artbridges.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/moncton3.jpg?w=300\" width=\"244\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgcmoncton.com\">Boys and Girls Club of\u00a0Moncton<\/a> is part of \u00a0Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada.\u00a0\u00a0It has an outstanding<span style=\"color:#33cccc;\"> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">arts program<\/span><\/span>called: A-Zone.\u00a0\u00a0The centre\u00a0was<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> founded<\/span> in\u00a0Moncton\u00a0in 1957.\u00a0Its\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">mandate<\/span> is\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.\u00a0\u00bb (web).\u00a0The\u00a0general <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">model<\/span> is\u00a0an arts program within an established community centre.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">catchment area<\/span> is 9 communities including low income housing areas in\u00a0Moncton, New Brunswick. The<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> languages of service<\/span> are primarily\u00a0English and French.\u00a0It\u00a0serves\/works with\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">ages<\/span>: 6-18.\u00a0The daily <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">number of children and youth<\/span> that attend the entire A-Zone program is between 175-200 participants per day. There are 12 A-Zone programs that run each day.\u00a0The<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> hours of operation<\/span> of the A-Zone program are 3-9 PM Monday through Saturday. \u00a0The\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">arts disciplines<\/span> offered are music, dance, drama, photography, movie making, creative writing, painting, and drawing.\u00a0\u00a0The entire club has\u00a03\u00a0full-time\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">staff<\/span>,\u00a03-4\u00a0part-time staff, \u00a0138\u00a0approximate volunteers\/year.\u00a0 It\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">permanent art studio<\/span> within a building that the Boys and Girls Club owns.\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">drop-in<\/span>. It\u00a0offers\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">registered classes<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> free<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0It has many<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> events and art shows<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The A-Zone\u00a0is<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> really good at<\/span> outreach. Staff go out each night with their bus and pick up 100 kids from 9 surrounding communities. There is a problem with accessibility because most kids can&rsquo;t walk to the club because there are highways in the way.\u00a0The distance for a full bus run is 15km (round-trip), and the\u00a0maximum\u00a0distance of any community is 9km away.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They are\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">known for<\/span> their amazing variety of arts and music, as well as their transportation service for the children and youth; which makes this free arts program highly accessible. Its<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> strengths<\/span> are\u00a0its welcoming environment for New Canadians, French, English and Indigenous who can all come together.\u00a0Its<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"> goals<\/span> this year\u00a0are to recruit members of the retiring community to volunteer.\u00a0Its\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">challenges<\/span> this year are staff\/volunteer turnover and funding.
