Veith Street Gallery Studio Association<\/a> (VSGSA) is a\u00a0community arts educational organization <\/span>that was founded in 2003 by <\/span>Michel<\/span> Seary.<\/span><\/span> It\u00a0supports<\/span> members of Creative Spirit East by providing exhibition venues such as Veith Street Gallery in <\/span>Halifax<\/span> and the Pedway Picture Gallery in Dartmouth<\/span>. Its\u00a0mandate<\/span> is to provide a vechicle for artists who are facing challenges with disabilities, and provide them with a space to learn the bussiness of art as well as to create artwork. The\u00a0participants <\/span>are a broad spectrum of 90 artists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This Halifax based organization has a\u00a0catchment area<\/span> that reaches Dartmouth, <\/span><\/span>Cape Breton<\/span>, <\/span>Annapolis<\/span> Valley Area<\/span>,\u00a0 and Amherst. Artists can be associated with the centre without having to travel. Volunteers often drive out to meet people and bring back their artwork. Veith Street <\/span><\/span>Gallery Studio Association<\/span> actively partners <\/span>and links with other community service providers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The language of service is English. The artists who are exhibited in the gallery are adults. However,<\/span><\/span> VSGSA<\/span>does lots of <\/span>community outreach programs<\/span><\/span> through the Visual Connections Project<\/span>,\u00a0 primarily with youth with disabilities and youth who face barriers such as racism, and poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n


\nThe\u00a0arts disciplines offered<\/span> are: visual, photography, printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, 3D work, writing and short stories, <\/span>graphic novels<\/span>, and poetry. They want to partner with a local institution to use ceramic facilities. It has no full-time staff<\/span>, 6 part-time staff, and approximately 15 volunteers\/year.\u00a0 It has one permanent\u00a0gallery<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Veith Street Gallery<\/span> and a second that is a kiosk gallery<\/span> called the <\/span><\/span>Pedway Picture Gallery<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a drop-in for members.\u00a0The artist contacts the gallery, and they do not <\/span><\/span><\/span>have<\/span><\/span> to disclose their disability.<\/span> There is a $20 annual fee, or they’ll take a drawing instead of the fee if its too much for someone to pay.<\/span> It accepts participants who are referred as well as people who do a self-referral. It has events and art shows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Veith Street Gallery Studio Association<\/span><\/span> is very good<\/span><\/span> at accomodating the people who come to them, they really strive to welcome and not be judgmental. So many of the people who attend have gone through a lot of scrutiny and they don’t do that. They are known for really trying to reach others and make connections with the broader community and service providers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Its goals this year<\/span> are to try and increase funding. They also have limited hours and <\/span><\/span>part-time<\/span> staff. It\u00a0needs<\/span> art materials and supplies for the studio space such as painting supplies, drawing materials, paper. Framing is a big part of what they want to do more of. They need more equipement to make frames and fix frames. They also need help with transportation and finding a vehicle to move the art around.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Veith Street has a board of directors<\/span> who are from the community. It\u00a0could use some support <\/span>with\u00a0 strategic planning, governance,\u00a0 fundraising.<\/span><\/span>VSGSA<\/span> is an <\/span>emerging community art<\/span> organization. <\/span><\/span>VSGSA<\/span> is\u00a0interested in partnering<\/span> or doing outreach with other community arts projects\/programs\/organizations\/resources across <\/span>Canada<\/span>. It is interested in sistering\/linking with another emerging\/established one to share information with.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
