3rd Annual Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival, July 23-27 (Ottawa)

The Asinabka Festival is excited to announce our 2014 film festival line-up, screening Canadian and International Indigenous film.

This years festival takes place over 5 days, and includes 2 outdoor film screenings on Victoria Island (Opening & Closing Night), an evening of film and live music at Club SAW, film screenings in the luxurious Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Nature, and an Art Gallery Crawl at Gallery 101 and Platform Gallery.

Nogojiwanong (Peterborough) Music Spotlight
Fri. July 25, 10pm @ Club SAW (67 Nicholas St.)
This spotlight highlights some of the talented Indigenous musicians who call Peterbrough, Ontario, home.  Featuring Tara Williamson, Sarah DeCarlo, & Sean Conway and his band, this will be an evening of rockabilly, soul, folk, and country music that you won’t want to miss!

Noongwa (Now/Today) Art Exhibition Opening
Thurs. July 24, 7pm @ Gallery 101 (51B Young St.)
This five person exhibition at Gallery 101 includes artwork by Erin Marie Konsmo (Michif/Cree), Fiya Bruxa (Latino/Mapuche), Ernie Paniccioli (Cree), Jordan Bennett (Mi’kmaq), and Nyle Johnston (Anishinabe). The Opening will feature a drum group, live music, live painting, spoken word, dj’s, & food + drinks.

Maanpii (Here) Art Exhibition
Thurs. July 24, 7pm @Platform Gallery(51C Young St.)
A five person exhibition at Platform Gallery featuring local artists: Carmel Whittle (Mi’kmaq), Simon Brascoupe (Algonquin), Laura Leah (Mohawk), Randy Mayes (Anishinabe), & Brad Henry (Tlingit). This show is part of a “Gallery Crawl” and opens at the same time as the Noongwa Exhibition!

“Who Shot Ya?”: A Journey through Ernie Paniccioli’s documentation of hip hop.  With a slideshow, ‘Behind the lens’ stories, and a Q & A.

Solidarity Assembly: Decolonizing Together
Wed. July 23, 7-8:45pm @ Victoria Island
Starting with an Indigenous Walking Tour at the human rights monument and ending at Victoria Island, where various grassroots organizations will gather to discuss issues of solidarity with Indigenous peoples. This event will also feature a talk by Bob Lovelace (Ardoch Algonquin First Nation), and be followed by Asinabka’s opening night outdoor film Screening of Rhymes for Young Ghouls.
