POWER OF THE ARTS NATIONAL FORUM (Ottawa – 2013)

“Organized by the Michaëlle Jean Foundation and Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the inaugural Power of the Arts National Forum: Advancing Social Change, will take place between September 27 to 29, 2013, in Ottawa.

Under the direction of Jean-Daniel Lafond, Co-Chair of the Michaëlle Jean Foundation and Senior Fellow at the Faculty, and Dr. John Osborne, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Forum Organizing Committee is seeking papers that highlight the power of the arts and their contribution to social change in Canada, particularly in the following areas:

  • Public Safety and Access to Justice
  • Mental and Physical Health
  • Urban and Community Renewal
  • Economic Development and Social Enterprise
  • New Technologies and Social Change
  • Cultural Institutions and Community Integration
  • Diversity and Social Inclusion
  • Democratic Participation
  • Voice and Identity

The Forum itself will gather over 150 researchers, policymakers, artists, legal scholars, mental health experts, and physicians, from across the country, to:

  • Share research findings on the social and economic impact of the arts,
  • Highlight best practices of grassroots efforts to generate social change through the arts and culture, and
  • Identify interdisciplinary and inter-sector strategies to build stronger and more resilient communities in Canada.

Over the three days, Forum participants will help draft a national agenda identifying ways to generate new interdisciplinary research and social innovation for more inclusive, healthy and prosperous communities, through the arts and culture.

A jury will select from the submissions to identity panellists who will make 20 minute oral presentations, followed by brief Q&A, during Forum workshops. You can submit your paper proposal (no more than 500 words and in PDF format), to the attention of Mr. Peter Flegel, Michaëlle Jean Foundation Director of Communications and Programs, by email at pflegel@fmjf.ca. The deadline for papers is May 15th, 2013.
