Call for submissions – Indigenous Curatorial Incubator Program
Deadline: March 25th, 2015, 5pm

SAW Video Media Art Centre is pleased to be partnering with the Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival to provide a unique opportunity for emerging Indigenous media art curators. In the summer of 2015, we will lead two young people through the process of curating a theatrical screening and a gallery-based exhibition of media artworks.

Representatives from both Asinabka and SAW Video will serve on the selection committee and select two applicants, who will work together as a team. Successful applicants will work under the guidance of a mentor with experience in the Indigenous arts and culture community over a four-month period. They will get the chance to meet with various other local arts and culture professionals, receive specialized training, take part in workshops, go on field trips to galleries and distributors, perform coordinated library and online research, and other activities that will build their expertise as media art curators. They will also be guided through the process of collaboratively creating a theme, writing a curatorial essay, and taking on some administrative and staging/mounting duties. The program will culminate in the presentation of both a screening at Club SAW (67 Nicholas St.) and a gallery exhibition (location TBC) in August. Project expenses will be paid for by the host organizations and successful applicants will receive a curator’s fee for their work.

Requirements:
– You must live in the Ottawa-Gatineau region or have independent means of transportation
– You must self-identify as Indigenous
– You must be between the ages of 18 and 35
– You must not have previously curated more than one theatrical screening or gallery exhibition of media art
– You must provide a 1-page letter of intent explaining why you want to take part in this program and what your curatorial interests are, along with a C.V. / resume (3 pages max.)
