“From October 4 to 7, join us for the first edition of the Latin American Media Arts Symposium (LAMAS) in Toronto.

Over the course of 4 days, we will gather with a group of curious and thoughtful artists, filmmakers, critics, and academics engaging with Latin American* artistic production in Canada. We will be having panel discussions, round tables, performances, and special collaborations with local arts organizations. Some of the questions we will be tackling are: how are spaces and institutions supporting the visibility of Latin American media arts and film in Canada? What challenges and opportunities arise from translations and mistranslations? How are identities and bodies transformed as a new notion of home is built? How can we move forward through local and transnational collaboration?

All panels will be open to the public, and entrance will be free! Please register in advance.

Dates

Wednesday, October 4, to Saturday, October 7.

Where:

Friends House, 60 Lowther Ave, Toronto.”

“We are currently looking for people to participate in virtual, theatre-based workshop sessions as part of the script development process in this project. In these online sessions, experienced MCT facilitators will guide participants through engaging theatre-based activities designed to unpack participants’ insights, experiences, and perspectives exploring race and privilege, to contribute to the final Forum Theatre script that will be developed. The play will be performed virtually by professional actors for audiences across Canada in May/June to catalyze social change around racism. If these topics resonate with you, please join us for one of these sessions!

Project Description:

Mixed Company Theatre is researching, developing and will present an original new play about racism and white privilege. This play will be created in consultation with artists and community groups with lived experiences of the topics.

The play will be in the style of Forum Theatre, meaning the scenes presented to the audience will depict current challenges of race and privilege, as discovered through the consultation phase of the project. Then, audiences will be invited by an experienced MCT Artist Facilitator to comment on the challenging scenes, suggest changes, and replace characters directly in the scenarios to try out their own strategies to result in a positive, alternative ending to the play. In the process, audiences discover actionable ideas they can use when faced with these situations in real life.

The final performances in the project will be performed virtually by professional actors for audiences across Canada in May/June to catalyze social change around racism.”

“The forum will expand on some of the work being done at the Silk Road Institute as well as work being done in the broader arts community.

Silk Road Institute is hosting an in-person and virtual forum with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and presented with the Michaëlle Jean Foundation and Centaur Theatre, to foster dialogue about the challenges facing Muslim and under-represented communities in the arts sector, and explore opportunities for increased youth engagement in the arts sector.

Join us at Centaur Theatre on March 30th for an afternoon of discussion and networking.

1:30 PM – Opening Remarks: Silk Road Institute, Michaëlle Jean Foundation, and Centaur Theatre.

2:00 PM – Youth Visions: Keeping eyes on the future of youth leadership in the performing arts.

As a growing arts organization, Silk Roads Institute prioritizes the work, expressions, and interests of the youth in our community. We are committed to increasing opportunities given to youth that allow them to become more active in their community and in extracurricular activities, while creating lifelong skills. Through leadership learning, youth experience the transformative power of creativity, and gain a deepened belief in their own capacity to learn, take risks, persist and achieve.

Speakers: Jessica Abdallah, Iman Nakhala.
Moderator: Ahsan Moghul
3:00 PM – Beyond Representation: Expanding Authentic Muslim Storytelling

Equity means more than representation; we must also look deeper, at the structures themselves which keep us siloed, and the functioning of social, cultural and economic power when it comes to changing the shape of the arts industry. The artists and panelists in this conversation will speak to their experiences in pushing beyond the tropes of representation and the work that still needs to be done at a structural and policy-level to achieve true inclusion and equity within the arts sector.

Speakers: Tendisai Cromwell, Uzma Jalaluddin.
Moderator: Mohamed Shaheen
4:00PM – Reception”

Although more women and gender diverse muralists have become established and well-known artists over the years, mural art has traditionally been -and continues to be- a (mostly white) male dominated field full of barriers and challenges for gender diverse artists. How can we create more space for women and gender diverse creators to participate in street art culture? How can we help these artists tackle many of the barriers they face? Join Mural Routes and East End Arts for an afternoon of learning and brainstorming with some of the best artists in the street art world to jam on how to make our streets for everyone, and our Walls for All!

“Arts organizations are looking toward the future to ensure the sustainability of their efforts, which requires cultivating engagement with youth and supporting their involvement and leadership within our creative communities, arts organizations, and institutions. How can our sector better engage youth in impactful and long-lasting ways?

The 6IX Academy, a social entrepreneurship high school program at the Toronto Central Academy, has been centering student voice into the development of their curriculum where arts, culture and creativity is part of their high school experience, community and beyond.

By providing students with real-world experiences in arts entrepreneurship, marketing, fashion, photography, graphic design, event planning, among others, the 6ix Academy actively supports the creative development of young people while offering pathways to careers in the arts and culture sector in Canada.

The webinar will be presented in English. Our recording will be available with French captions.
Mar 9, 2023 02:00 PM EST”
