Job Description: Director of Programming, Sâkêwêwak Artists’ Collective

Sâkêwêwak Artists’ Collective is a non-profit artist-run centre whose mandate is to support and facilitate the development of contemporary First Nations arts practices. In order to carry out our mandate, Sâkêwêwak delivers projects in many streams of programming – Annual Storytellers Festival, Presentation, Residency (Professional development), and gallery space.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Director of Programming will be responsible for facilitating the short-term and long-term programming objectives of the organization which include: project planning and support; policy development; human resources; and budgetary and financial management.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Project Planning and Support

  • Facilitate the organization’s artistic objectives by providing program support and by carrying out the short-term and long-term programming plan established by the Collective
  • Continue with the development of a long-term plan to have three staff (Director, Financial Officer, Production Assistant) with two part-time (Membership/Outreach Coordinator and Gallery/Fund-raising person)
  • Follow three year program planning from the Canada Council Operational Grant
  • Liaise with Gallery Committee on programming plans
  • Work with Production Assistant to oversee projects and coordination
  • Work with Board on fund-raising and hiring of potential contractors
  • Working with Production Assistant on contracts for artists and Festival
  • Oversee and facilitate the documentation of projects and the collection of data for the purposes of project evaluation (oversee Production Assistant collecting Statistics for CADAC system)
  • Oversee the execution of all artist agreements and agreements for production and technical services related to projects
  • Provide support to and work directly with Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Artists and participants to deliver and/or assist in project development and delivery
  • Work with Chair in leading membership meetings
  • Run membership campaigns
  • Outreach to other Aboriginal and art organizations for the purpose of developing partnerships
  • Outreach and regular contact with all funders and sponsors
  • Provide written or verbal quarterly reports to the Board of Directors on all project/program initiatives, advocacy activities, fund-raising and networking
  • Set up Annual General Meeting with Board
  • Assist the Board as required

B. Policy Development

  • Ensure Board and Staff adhere to Sâkêwêwak policies
  • Support the Board or a hired consultant in facilitating a review of Sâkêwêwak policies on an annual basis or as required

C. Human Resources

  • Supervise, train and coach Staff
  • Lead weekly meetings with Staff
  • Meet with Staff one on one to determine professional development opportunities

D. Budgetary and Financial Management

  • Follow grant schedule/calendar of dates for the year
  • Be primarily responsible for the preparation and submission of all grant applications relating to funding for projects
  • Write operational grants for Canada Council (three years) and Saskatchewan Arts Board (yearly)
  • Write other Project grants
  • Work with Financial Officer on calculating grant application finances
  • Work with Financial Officer and Auditor on annual financial audit
  • Update CADAC system with Financial Officer
  • Oversee work of the Financial Officer on financial reporting for operational and project grants
  • Submit all receipts and financial documentation to Financial Officer
  • In cooperation with the Administrative/Program Assistant and Financial Officer, prepare project budgets and manage the expenditure of all project budgets
  • Prepare final reports for all grant monies
  • Meet all grant deadlines

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts degree and at least three years of professional administration experience for a non-profit organization
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary arts, Aboriginal art, and arts funding agencies
  • Experience in grant writing for amounts up to $50,000
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to public speak, network and outreach
  • Ability to manage projects in a variety of artistic disciplines
  • Proven organizational, collaborative, and leadership skills
  • Working knowledge of project budgeting, cost projection and reporting
  • Computer literate with proficiency in word processing, database, spreadsheet, internet software, Google docs, and CADAC system
  • Willingness to travel and learn

ASSETS

  • Solid background working in the promotion of First Nation, Métis or Inuit arts and culture
  • Previous experience working in the context of contemporary arts with First Nations, Métis or Inuit
  • Ability to develop project promotional materials
  • A practice in the field of visual, media, performance or multi-disciplinary arts

REPORTING
The Director will report directly to the Sâkêwêwak Board of Directors

CONTRACT TERM AND EVALUATION
This position is a renewable contract term of two years, with a minimum of one annual performance review. A probationary period exists (minimum of three months). Salary and pay raises shall be determined by the Board of Directors. Pay raises will be based on an incremental pay scale, performance assessment, and budget provision.

SALARY RANGE
The annual salary is $40,000. This is a full-time position, 37.5 hrs/wk on a flex-time, with three weeks of paid vacation per year worked. The Sâkêwêwak office is open 10am – 5pm M-F including some weekends and during events.
