Event: Mixed Company Theatre’s 2nd Annual STARS Awards Gala (Toronto)

Mixed Company Theatre is delighted to announce the performance line-up for the 2nd Annual STARS Awards Gala – recognizing contribution to positive social change.

LaToya Rodney – motivational speaker, social worker, singer, rap artist, dancer, actress – plays the role of Master of Ceremonies, introducing honoured guests and ward recipients to artistic performances.

Set against a cocktail reception and silent auction backdrop, Danielle & Heather open MCT’s 2nd Annual STARS Awards Gala blending a unique dance fusion of belly dance with a flair of funk. Welcoming addresses follow leading to the much anticipated performance of DISS – written by award-winning playwright, Rex Deverell, directed by Associate Artistic Director, Duncan McCallum. Multidisciplinary in approach – DISS weaves hip hop and beat boxing into a forum theatre play – presenting the worst-case scenarios of gang involvement, catalyzing audiences to speak-up and make a change in their lives and communities. Developed in partnership with Toronto Police Service, the DISS troupe performs at MCT’s Annual STARS Awards Gala while on its 3rd consecutive year touring Toronto priority neighbourhoods – May 11-June 10 2011 – made possible by support from Toronto Police Services Board.

The Gala second half is ushered in by Axé Capoeira Studio’s magnificent Afro-Brazilian style dance spiced with elements of acrobatics, music, art, and self-defense, followed by the exciting STARS Awards presentation ceremony. At evening close, Gala guests and award recipients are treated to the imaginative artistry of lindy hop and rock and roll from Toronto’s Bees’ Knees Dance Studio, specializing in creating opportunities for amateur dancers. Don’t miss this memorable and important event, dedicated to recognizing contribution to positive social change.
