“The Arts Network for Children and Youth, presents the National Youth Arts Week 2014 Launch Party, on Thursday, May 1st, at 6 pm at Sketch, in the new Artscape Youngplace building (180 Shaw Street), and live streamed online across Canada. Young creative leaders across the country are busy planning creative events in communities across Canada for the third annual National Youth Arts Week. The launch will feature special presentation by Mayoral candidate Olivia Chow, Trinity/Spadina city councillor Mike Layton, and the Arts Network for Children & Youth.

Patrick Parson, Artistic Director of Ballet Creole, will be doing a dance performance leading into a workshop. There will be youth arts performances by spoken word artists from RISE Edutainment; Arts For Children and Youth will host a collaborative art experience; a film screening, workshop on creative writing using emojis, and a fashion show will be presented by West End Alternative Secondary School. A market place of schools and arts organizations will be on site for guests to connect and collaborate.

“The cross-Canada coordinators over the past months have been connecting and sharing resources from communities as radically different as Vancouver to Iqaluit to Huron County! As the former community coordinator in Sault Ste. Marie and Red Lake, Ontario, it has been surreal to be coordinating Youth Arts Week from the National office, and I hope it inspires youth from small communities that their work is vital,” says Rihkee Strapp, National Program Coordinator for National Youth Arts Week.

“Through our work we’ve seen that youth across Canada, whether they live in rural communities or in big cities, have so much creativity, and when given the opportunity will use that creativity to make positive change in their communities,” says Linda Albright, Executive Director of the Arts Network for Children and Youth (ANCY).

National Youth Arts Week is being coordinated by ANCY, a national arts service organization based in Toronto, in partnership with the Michaëlle Jean Foundation (FMJF). It is being executed by creative young people and arts organizations who are helping hundreds of youth run arts-based community projects in their communities from May 1st through May 7th 2014. The goal of the week is to celebrate youth-led creative expression and community involvement.
