Profile Highlight: Art Hives (Canada)

As ArtBridges’ Community-Engaged Arts Directory grows, we realize that it’s a bit overwhelming to read through all of the profiles. We’re hoping that by occasionally highlighting some profiles on our blog, you may learn about an initiative that you may not have initially seen in the directory. Also, if you know of a Canadian community-engaged arts for social change initiative that isn’t in our directory, but should be, please let us know! We love and need your input/feedback in building this resource! -Lisa, Content Coordinator at Artbridges.

“The Art Hives Network exists since 2014 to connect and support spaces and projects, across Canada and the world, that:

  • welcome everyone as an artist without judgment on artistic ability / believe that art making is a behaviour shared by all human beings.
  • are based on celebrating the strengths of individuals and communities, rather than placing the focus on their difficulties or diagnoses.
  • are “public homeplaces” (Belenky, 1997) that create opportunities for dialogue between and empowerment for people of different ages, cultures, abilities and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • encourages self-directed experiences of creativity, learning, and community-driven horizontal skillsharing and leadership.
  • include an element of free access / non-monetary economy.”
