Project Highlight: The HUB Arts Project

The HUB Arts Project

“What is the HUB arts project?
The HUB arts project is a collaborative art program with a focus on connection and the importance of many individuals working together to create a better, stronger whole. This piece was created with a specific focus on rural issues. Developed and facilitated as part of a research project by artist and Toronto Art Therapy Institute graduate candidate, Krista Schneider, the HUB arts project is a program designed to encourage communication, creativity, self-awareness and connection within a community.

The HUB arts project may have applications for a wide range of populations and environments, such as long term care facilities, hospitals, workplaces, schools, community organizations and families.

How does the HUB arts project work?
The HUB arts project is an 8 week program focusing on the concept of the HUB: the place of connection, where many individual elements come together to create a whole. The artwork features a large image of a wheel with many spokes. The wheel image is applied to small canvases (at least as many canvases as individuals in a given group) which are then painted, coloured or collaged by each
individual, to represent themselves as an individual element of a larger whole.

The wheel is an excellent representation of individuals in a community and the are piece of many canvases coming together to create a larger picture also suports this concept.

Each week, there is a different topic of discussion for the group, corresponding to the concept of the HUB. Topics such as the importance of individuality, connection, working together while maintaining individuality, areas of improvement and how connections could be made strong. The finished project is displayed to create awareness about rural issues and as a representation of the individuals as well as the group.”
