Celebrate International Women’s Day with Unsung Sheroes (Mar 9-30, Scarborough Arts)

“This March, in line with International Women’s Day, Scarborough Arts will recognize and celebrate all the amazing women amongst us who continuously make extraordinary things happen from the ordinary whether in their own industries, their local community in Scarborough, or in the many lives that they touch. “Unsung Sheroes” is a series of free events that will feature strong, talented and truly inspirational women, empowering artworks and performances, and of course, wonderful food and conversations.

Here are the event highlights:

VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION
March 9 to 30, 2015
The Bluffs Gallery
Thirteen local artists will showcase visual arts pieces that recognize and celebrate the “Unsung Shero” in their lives. Exhibiting artists include: Dania Ansari, Joylyn Chai, Margaret Chown, Tara Dorey, Samira El-Kassis, Irit Epstein, Patricia Goudie, Luanne Maskell, Afsaneh Shafai, Patrice Stephen-Bourgeault, Virginia Tran, Marilyn Walsh, and Marnie White.

LITERARY ARTS COMPILATION

Writers and poets creatively respond to the question, “Who is your Unsung Shero?” Pieces will be published on our website throughout March and will be showcased at our Opening Reception on March 9.

We are STILL accepting literary art submissions! Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis until the end of March so keep working on your Unsung-Shero-themed poems or stories and send them to us! Find out more about the submissions process here.

OPENING RECEPTION
Monday, March 9
6 to 8 pm at The Bluffs Gallery
Celebrate with us as we open this important month with art, music, and ideas. Kim Blackwell, Managing Artistic Director of 4th Line Theatre – Millbrook and Director of HER2 – a play that tackles the difficult subject of the invasive breast cancer gene of the same name – will share her experiences as a woman working in today’s theatre community. Be entertained by the music of Pantayo, an all-women kulintang ensemble, and enjoy free food and refreshments provided by Caribbean Flair Catering.

LUNCH & LEARN 
Friday, March 13
12 noon to 2 pm at The Bluffs Gallery
Join author Carole Staveley in this intimate Lunch & Learn event that will inspire and empower. Carole will talk about her book, Not Lying Downwhich chronicles her life and struggles as a woman suffering from chronic pain. She will focus on how she dealt with and overcame her debilitating health issues and went on to compete in the 2013 IRONMAN™ event. Gain insight on how to achieve new heights in your physical well-being, and get a chance to win a signed copy of Carole Staveley’s book!

A free buffet lunch will be provided by Caribbean Flair Catering.

CAREGIVER’S REALITY ROUNDTABLE
Tuesday, March 24
6 pm to 8 pm at Taylor Memorial Library (1440 Kingston Road)
Learn about the realities of dementia and its related illnesses, and identify what it means to be healthy with just a few, quick and easy steps. The roundtable discussion will be led by Peter Marczyk from the Alzheimer Society of Toronto and Gail Wilson from Balance Enterprise.

All events are FREE and open-to-all. In addition to free food and refreshments, there will also be FREE arts activities for school-aged kids available at all Unsung Sheroes events.
