“From October 28-30th, Nova Scotia’s creative community will gather in Halifax to learn about how Art Hives build communities across the world and in Nova Scotia. A strategic plan will be developed by attendees to support Art Hives in the province and to deepen their impact. How can we connect the work being done in this sector to social and economic change projects in Nova Scotia?
An Art Hive is a community creative space that welcomes everyone as an artist. From an art pop-up in a local library to a community studio or gallery, at its heart, an Art Hive is about inclusion, respect and learning. It’s a welcoming place to talk, make art and build communities. Responding in creative ways to things that matter.
Event Description
Art Hives is a term coined by Concordia University’s professor Janis Timm-Bottos. “It’s not a franchise. It’s not a business or a service. It’s about citizens interested in making the world a better place for themselves and their children,” says Janis about Art Hives in a Montreal Gazette article.
Inspired by Janis’ lead, and noticing the long history and tradition of free community art spaces in Nova Scotia, ‘Art Hives’, universities, Halifax Public Libraries and others from across Nova Scotia are coming together to participate in the first Art Hives Symposium in the region.
150 attendees and leaders from the community, private and public sectors and from communities across the province will gather for three days of learning, dialogue, networking, strategic planning and community-based experiences in Halifax’s North End, Central Library and Mount Saint Vincent from October 28-30th.”
