CAHEP’s Inside Out Community Art Studio brings free arts programming to downtown Fort William (Thunder Bay, ON)

« The Inside Out Community Art Studio brings free arts programming in a welcoming and inspiring space in the heart of Downtown Fort William.

The space brings people together through art-making, exploring the power of the ideas of participants.

Inside Out is truly community driven, supporting the Thunder Bay Counts goal of fostering an Inclusive, Connected Community. When participants ask for an arts project to take place, our staff and volunteers find a way to bring it to life. We emphasize the importance of listening to, responding to, and being inspired by those who join us in the space, especially those who are not always heard.

Working in a vacant storefront in Victoriaville Mall, we engage 20-40 people each week. People of all experience levels, from those who have never tried artmaking before, to seasoned artists, join us. From young families, to youth, to seniors, we work inclusively, aiming to create an environment where everyone is welcome.

Projects that have taken place include shadow puppetry, painting projects, miniature-sculpture, graffiti arts, and storytelling.

The arts provide an approachable opportunity for people and communities to build stronger roots. Creating in a safe space can foster leadership, encourage healthy risk-taking, nurture collaboration, and share stories that have not yet been told.

Goals are to:
– Foster collaboration and sharing of stories.
– Work with local artists who are positive role models.
– Increase positive activities in the area.
– Listen and respond to the needs of community members.
– Encourage people to work together and build stronger peer support systems.

Take Action:
We always welcome donations that will help support the continuation of this space. Volunteers with clear police record checks with vulnerable sector screening are always welcome. Volunteers can assist artists with projects, help with set-up/clean-up, and work together with participants in the space. Email cahepdirector@gmail.com to get involved! »
