« Call for Nominations for the Barbara Laronde Award for Best New Northern Artist!
About the Award: Native Women in the Arts’ (NWIA) inaugural 2015 Barbara Laronde Award will celebrate the career of an emerging Indigenous female artist based in Northern Ontario. This award has been created to acknowledge the achievements of one outstanding female artist from Northern Ontario, and to honour the legacy of NWIA founder, Sandra Laronde, and her vision and commitment to Indigenous artists. Sandra’s 19 years of leadership at NWIA has paved the way for many Indigenous artists at various stages of their careers. Sandra asked to have the award named after her mother, Barbara, who has been the backbone of her family and a leader in the northern Ontario community, Temagami First Nation. Barbara inspired Sandra and her siblings to be creative and entrepreneurial, and it is with this spirit that NWIA launches this new award.
